Event and Activities

Prairie Music Residency

The Prairie Music Residency was set up by Saskatoon Brass Bands Inc. in 2013 to help further enrich the long-standing tradition of British-style brass banding in Saskatchewan and North America, while offering players a chance to work with world class brass band musicians and improve their skills in an intimate and inclusive environment.

The course takes place at the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon) and is divided into two streams: brass band and percussion. Each course runs simultaneously during each day, combining a mixture of rehearsals, clinics, masterclasses and other performance opportunities that culminate in two concerts with the guest soloists, conductors and clinicians.

Steve Weiss Mallet Festival

The Steve Weiss Mallet Festival features some of the top mallet players in the world. The festival is dedicated to the memory of Steve Weiss the founder of Steve Weiss Percussion. Steve Weiss is the biggest percussion distributor in the world, and while Steve was alive he helped many of us buy percussion equipment by selling at the best prices in the world. And he was supportive of our work and efforts as percussionists. I had a friendship with Steve that lasted from 1979 until his death in 2014. I’m honored to be able to put this festival on in his memory. This event is hosted/coordinated by Tony Miceli.

There will be 3 events during the weekend of August 2-4.

  • Friday August 2nd - Barnes Museum 6-9pm

  • Saturday August 3rd - Chris’ Jazz Cafe - 8pm-11pm
